1 Nephi 2:11

“…[Laman and Lemuel] did murmur in many things against their father, because he was a visionary man, and had led them out of the land of Jerusalem, to leave the land of their inheritance, and their gold, and their silver, and their precious things, to perish in the wilderness.”

One of Laman and Lemuel’s weaknesses is documented here. They had their hearts set upon riches. They would have inherited the land and riches of their father. We know that Lehi lived only another 10 years or so, so he was already old and perhaps Laman and Lemuel were looking forward to these inheritances imminently.

This reminds me of people who list among their assets the inheritance of a living relative. We should not plan on these inheritances – we never know what might occur. We should plan to earn our own way through life, not depending on, or planning to receive, inheritances from family members who have been successful in attaining wealth. I think those who are waiting for living relatives to pass on to inherit from them will not treat them in the same way as if there were no inheritance. If our hearts are set upon riches, it is difficult to also have it set on spiritual things.
