1 Nephi 5:5

“But behold, I have obtained a land of promise, in the which things I do rejoice; yea, and I know that the Lord will deliver my sons out of the hands of Laban, and bring them down again unto us in the wilderness.”

Lehi here shows true faith. In fact, he has not yet obtained the land of promise, he has nothing tangible to show for his obedience, but he is so sure that the Lord will deliver on His promise that he counts those things as already fulfilled. Of course, he is comforting his wife who thinks her sons are dead, so I’m sure he’s laying out the good parts of the situation as plain as he can, but there’s a lot to be said about this kind of faith.

This is the kind of faith that makes us pay tithing, serve in callings and keep the commandments with all our heart. When we know the Lord will bless us, and we know it so well, that we act with a perfect assurance that the Lord will keep His promise, we show true faith and it becomes like knowledge. While the world teaches us not to “count our ducks before they hatch”, with the Lord in the equation, the promises are sure.

One Response to “I Have Obtained a Land of Promise”

  • Dan H:

I believe that Lehi KNEW he would obtain a land of promise. I also believe there is more to the statement. All of us needs to “obtain a land of promise”. I believe there is much more to it, but I believe it is a place of peace, assurance, a calm, even in the mist of mourning, anxiety, pain or suffering. We can know that the Lord is with us when we are consistently striving by doing the fundamentals, daily prayer, scriptures, church and temple attendance, we will receive revelation from God and can know for ourselves regarding our children
